Tornadoes, or twisters, are funnels of spinning air with violent winds and deadly power. They occur during thunderstorms when cool air moves over warm air. The air rises into the storm clouds where it starts to rotate. When a column of air tightens and speeds up, a funnel cloud drops down. If the funnel hits the ground, a tornado is born. These whirling wonders often leave a trail of devastation.

Tornadoes are frequent and unpredictable, making them so dangerous. In the US, about 1,000 occur annually. Tornado Alley in the Midwest and Dixie Alley in the South are where great air masses meet and many tornadoes strike. Tornadoes are measured using the Enhanced Fujita Scale, ranging from EF-0 to EF-5 with winds over 200 mph. Their intensity can only be estimated after the damage is done. Tornadoes only last a few minutes and are small compared to hurricanes, so they are hard to directly link to global warming. There is still a lot to learn regarding the impact of climate change on the frequency and strength of tornadoes.
