Description

Volcanoes are places in the Earth’s crust where superheated rock reaches the surface. An eruption occurs when hot gas and molten rock burst out flinging ash and boulders into the sky. The most powerful ones occur where tectonic plates collide.

Memorable gift, educational tool, fun souvenir and collectible decoration for families, friends, students, educators, geologists, explorers, scientists and all fans of planet Earth. This soft plushie is sustainably crafted from recycled materials, and a vivid reminder of how the forces of nature shape our world.

Volcanoes are places in the Earth’s crust where superheated molten rock reaches the surface. An eruption occurs when hot gas and molten rock burst out flinging ash and boulders into the sky. The most powerful eruptions occur where tectonic plates collide, producing thick lava and dangerous pyroclastic flows. Molten rock below ground is magma. On the surface it is lava, burning everything in its path as it flows. When lava cools and hardens, a volcanic mountain is formed.

The Earth has about 1,500 active volcanoes, many along the Ring of Fire around the Pacific Ocean. Dormant volcanoes have not erupted for thousands of years, but may do so. Extinct volcanoes have not erupted for 10,000 years. The majority of all volcanoes are hidden below the sea.

There are many types of volcanoes. The world’s largest, Mauna Loa in Hawaii, is a shield volcano. Mount Saint Helens in Washington is a composite type. The one beneath Yellowstone National Park is called a hot spot. Volcanic regions have amazing geological features to visit including geysers, hot mineral springs and bubbling mud pools.
